Annual John O' Leary Testimonial - Dec 26th 2004 @ 1pm

Its that time of the year again where the might of Curraglass takes on the joined forces of Ballynoe and Conna. The last two years has turned out to be a huge success with the scores level with one win a apiece.

On both occasions, a big crowd has turned up. So make sure to turn up and bring as many friends to make it a special occassion for the memory of a special person.

25th April, Tony Bolger Cup Final, Lismore, Valley Rangers v Bride View United - 1 vs 0

This was Valley's second cup final in two weeks and after losing the previous week to Ardmore, Valley were hopeful of bringing some silverware back to the club. There was also the added incentive of beating near neighbours and fierce rivals Brideview!

Valley made a few inforced changes to the team from the previous week with Gordie moving up front to his preferred position. Twomey gave a rousing speech to motivate the players. Valley started well as they normally do with Colin Hogan in outstanding form on the right side of midfield.

In the first half, Bryan ran through on goal only for the linesman to flag for offside to another Valley player. Rumley missed a few sitters in the first half. Jim Lane was having a great game in midfield and Valley were coping well with any Brideview attacks. That was until the the ref awarded a penalty when a Brideview player smacked the ball against one of Valley's players hand. So Valley were facing a penalty, and no offence to Dineen, nobody thought he had a hope in hell of saving it. However, Dineen pulled off a mighty save saving it first and then just stopping it going over the line. A huge boost to Valley!

Valley had played well in the first half and should have been in front. Gord had been cutting them open with his few fancy tricks and flicks! They had a few great chances that should have been put away. Twomey brought on himself and Kearney in the second half. Kearney came on on the left side of midfield (somewhere he has never played before!!). Anytime he got on the ball, he caused problems for Brideview's defence and he was combining well with Gordie up front.

It was very tight in the second half with both teams having a few half chances but the goal finally came. A good move ended with Gordie getting the ball close to the Brideview box. Kearney made a nice run (never thinking that Gordie would pass it) around the Brideview defence. Gordie played a great ball and Kearney slotted it past the Brideview keeper with the outside of his foot from a tight angle. It was a nice finish to a great move. Valley players and supporters went mad with delight. It was no more than they deserved!

Of course, Valley then almost threw the game away right at the death. Some confusion between Valleys defence allowed Brideview in but it was a poor finish. Much to Valley's relief the final whislte came and Valley were delighted. Gord made a rather pathetic speech but the three cheers was nice! A good night was had by all as you can imagine.

Man of the Match was Dineen for this penalty save!

Team: Aiden Dineen, Brendan Hickey, Alan Carr, Damien O' Farrell, Paudy Noonan, John Carr, Jim Lane, Billy Carr Jnr, Colin Hogan, Terence Rumbley, Gordon Bryan.

Subs: Sean Twomey for Padraig Noonan, Shane Kearney for John Carr, John Ronan for Terence Rumley.

17th April, Dungarvan Tyre Cup Final, Modeligo, Valley Rangers v Ardmore - 0 vs 1

A great crowd turned up for the main Cup final of the season. Ardmore, who had won the league easily were going for the double and were in a confident frame of mind. Valley who were having a quiet enough season by their standard were going into this one as the underdogs.

Valley had a near enough full strength panel and the gaffer Twomey had a few selection headaches. The game started at a mighty pace. Both teams attacked from the start but it was Valley who had the advantage of a slight breeze that was on top. Billy Carr was pulling the strings in midfield with Twomey and Rumley causing a few problems up front.

Ardmore did not win the league so easily by being a bad team and that was evident when they got a rather fortunate goal. On one of their counter attacks, one of the Valley defenders went to clear the ball, it came off of one of the Ardmore strikers chins and cannoned off the cross bar. One of their midfielders followed it and tapped it in. It was a rather jammy goal but as the saying goes, you make your own luck.

It was a real blow to Valley as they had been well on top without creating much. Twomey just said to keep things going and something will happen. John Carr come on at half time and along with Brian Hogan who was excellent, the two of them were causing havoc with their pace and skill down the right side. Kearney also came on up front and had a few half chances of which none hit the target.

Try as Valley might, it was not to be. They had plenty of the ball but just did not cut the Ardmore defence open. Ardmore could have grabbed a goal or two on the counter attack but for some good defending from Farrell and Alan Carr who was excellent throughout. The final whistle went and Ardmore had won. It was another disappointment for Valley who had now lost this final three times. Fair play to Ardmore who have had an excellent season through hard work and dedication. As Billy Carr Snr said after the game, Ardmore had won with a lucky goal but they have worked hard all season and probably deserved the luck. If Valley had worked as hard, they would have gotten the same luck, so Billy asked the Valley players to learn from the game and work harder next season.

Man of the match went to an Ardmore player but in my opinion, it could have gone to Billy or Alan Carr who were both outstanding as were Damien Farrell and Brian Hogan.

Team: Aiden Dineen, Brendan Hickey, Alan Carr, Damien O' Farrell, Brian Hogan, Gordon Bryan, Jim Lane, Billy Carr Jnr, Colin Hogan, Terrence Rumbley, Sean Twomey.

Subs: John Carr for Colin Hogan. Shane Kearney for Sean Twomey Padraig Noonan for Jim Lane.

John O' Leary Memorial Trophy

Curaglass 2 - Conna and Ballynoe 2 (5-4 after penalties).

Last Sunday once again it was time for Curraglass to battle it out against Conna and Ballynoe for the John O' Leary Memorial Trophy. It was wonderful on such a chilly afternoon to see a fantastic turnout for both teams. Matt Harpur had the all but easy task of refereeing the game.

It was a thrilling game throughout with plenty of excitement. Damien O' Farrell opened the scoring for Curraglass when his long range effort somehow spilled under Aidan Dineen. Curraglass were well on top for the opening third and it was only a matter of time before a second goal came. Electric play from Donal Caples set up John Carr for an easy tap in. Conna and Ballynoe grabbed a goal back when Ger Lynch who is making a habit of scoring in this match brought it back to 2-1.

There was a great mix of ages for the second third with Mark Walsh and Kevin Mangan at 16 to Frank Ryan pushing on 50. The pace of Frank (Roberto Carlos) and Eoin Riordan down the left wing was terrorising the Conna and Ballynoe defence but it was difficult to break down the solid Mike Fitz and Martin O' Keffee. Conna and Ballynoe came close from a corner, but the post and crossbar denied them the equaliser. The second third remained scoreless and Curraglass could taste victory.

Both teams had enough chances in the final third to clinch victory. Conna and Ballynoe got their equaliser when in a goalmouth scramble Terrence Rumbley finished in spectacular style. It was to finish 2-2 and penalties would be the deciding factor. Billy Carr and Dick Leahy had the responsibility of taking the first penalty for either side; they made no mistakes with the finishing. Aidan Dineen saved Colin Hogan's effort and Seamus Noonan had the opportunity to give Conna and Ballynoe the lead but Alan Carr guessed the right way brought the teams back level. Donal O' Leary nearly put a hole in the net with his rasping shot but Curraglass were to make no more mistakes. Last years hero Ger Lynch was the unfortunate man to miss his penalty and Curraglass were crowned champions. Curraglass captain Niall Riordan was deleighted to be presented with the trophy. As Derry would say: "Football's coming home".

It was great that there was such large support to see the local soccer skills on display.

Valley Rangers 3 - Accrington Celtic 4

Valley left another lead slip in Accrington on Stephen's morning when they were 2-0 up. Accrington came back to win 4-3. Aidan Hogan, Gordon Bryan and Terrence Rumbley did the scoring for Valley. The less said about this match the better.

30th November, Premier League, Valley Park, Valley Rangers v Pinewood - 2 vs 3

Valley needed a win on Sunday to have any chance of realistically challenging for the league. Valley started well, John Carr and Terrence Rumbley both coming close. It wasn't long before Valley took the lead, Gordon Bryan won a freekick at the edge of the area, he took it himself and drilled into the bottom corner (about time he got one). Valley went off the boil after this and left Pinewood in for a soft goal. Pinewood, who looked to be the hungrier side took the lead when John Ronayne was deemed to have brought down a Pinewood player in the box, Alan Carr got his fingers to the ball but couldn't keep it out. Pinewood were now on top and were fighting for every ball, they soon had a 3-1 lead after a pinewood striker beat the offside and slid the ball passed Alan. Valley started to wake up a bit after this and started playing football. Colin Hogan flicked the ball over the Pinewood defence and John Carr was there to provide a cool finish, 3-2 going in a half time.

Valley were by no means out of the match and started to match Pinewoods aggression for the second half. Matters weren't helped when Brendan Hickey picked up knee injury, Sean Twomey was in at centre half. Valley had numerous corners and freekicks but didn't capitalise from them. Tempers were raised on more than one occasion and the game was becoming a physical battle. Richard Leahy on the sideline thought it was a ladies soccer game he came to see. Time was running out for Valley and no matter how much pressure they applied, they couldn't seem to pierce a hole in the Pinewood defence. With only a few minutes to go Valley finally broke through, John Carr had a great opportunity to level the game, when he got in behind the Pinewood defence, his effort went just right of the post. It finished 3-2, another disappointing result for Valley.

Team: Alan Carr, Brendan Hickey, John Ronayne, Niall Riordan, Damien O' Farrell, Paudy Noonan, Gordon Bryan, Billy Carr Jnr, Colin Hogan, Terrence Rumbley, John Carr.

Subs: Sean Twomey and not used Richard Leahy (cause he lost the football).

23rd November, Premier League, Lismore, Lismore v Valley Rangers - 3 vs 1

Valley didn't get the result they were hoping for against Lismore last Sunday. Valley started well, keeping the ball well and playing some good football. As the game proceeded however Lismore started to get on top in midfield and started creating opportunities, the Valley defence soaked up a lot of pressure in the first half. Lismore came close when a long range effort came back off the crossbar. Billy Carr was unlucky when his header grazed wide of the post. Valley were finding it hard to break through the Lismore defence and when they did Valley couldn't provide the finish required. It was a tough day for Valley's front men the quality of ball was poor against a much more physically stronger Lismore defence. Playing against the wind for the first half, Valley weren't complaining about being level at halftime.

Valley were hoping to put the pressure on Lismore for the second half, however Lismore's physical dominance in every area of the pitch became very noticeable, this was more of a battle than a football match. It wasn't long before Valley gave away yet another silly goal, losing the ball in defence and the Lismore striker left Alan Carr with no chance. Valley picked up their game for a while after this and Shane Kearney and Damien linked up well to give Rumbley the chance to equalise, which is exactly what he did. This lifted the Valley spirits once more. It was not to be however and again Valley stupidly gave away possession in defence, a threatening ball was drilled low across the Valley box and Damo while trying to clear knocked it in to the back of the Valley net. Valley started to push on a bit more trying to create more chances, but it was to no avail, as Valley pushed forward then began to leave gaps in defence, the game was sealed when a Lismore player broke from midfield and was left one on one with the keeper, he finished well and gave Alan Carr no chance. It finished 3-1 and Valley's heads were low after the game, with only 4 points from as many matches, Valleys challenge for the title is slipping and they certainly need to string some good results together to have any chance.

Team:Alan Carr, John Ronayne, Niall Riordan, Paudy Noonan, Brendan Hickey, Damien O' Farrell, Aidan Hogan, Jim Lane, Billy Carr Jnr, Shane Kearney, Terrence Rumbley.

Best for Valley: John Ronayne, Brendan Hickey and Billy Carr Jnr.

16th November, Premier League, Valley Park, Valley v Cappaquin Rangers - 6 vs 1

Only having 1 point from two league matches Valley needed a win on Sunday. Valley started the better stringing together some good passing movements and creating chances. John Carr and Terrence Rumbley were working hard upfront and were tormenting the Cappoquin defence every time they got the ball. Eventually their hard work paid off when Rumbley put a Cappoquin defender under pressure when he was clearing the ball, Rumbley's blocked clearance somehow found the back of the net, Valley weren't complaining. John Carr who was doing very well had to be substituted due to a stomach bug (very suspicious) and Shane Kearney was in to replace him. Cappoquin started putting pressure on the Valley defence who seemed to be coping easily however a lapse in concentration by Niall Riordan left Cappoquin with an opportunity to equalise, Dineen touched the ball onto the post but the rebound fell to a Cappoquin striker who simply couldn't miss, 1-1. Valley didn't let their heads drop and were back on top of the game from the tip off. Gordon Bryan won a free kick near the corner flag and his cross was put in by a Cappoquin defender. Two lucky goals meant that Valley had a 2-1 lead going in a half time.

Valley were totally dominant for the second half creating opportunity after opportunity. It wasn't long before Kearney pretty much sealed the game for Valley when he got on the end of a long Sean Twomey pass and finished with a rasping shot which went in off the post. The game got a bit hot headed at times, of course one of the Hogans (this time Aidan) wasn't too far from trouble, in all fairness he kept cool and only defended himself, however he did pick up a yellow card. Kearney put Rumbley through for his second and Valley's fourth when he tucked the ball underneath the keeper. The opportunist Kearney also picked up his second when he chased down a weak back pass and rounded the keeper to finish into an open goal,

5-1. A Cappoquin defender who must have got tired of chasing Shane decided to kick him instead, the referee warranted his actions with a red card. The final nail was put in the Cappoquin coffin when Niall Riordan got on to a "stray" Gordon Bryan pass and surprisingly he actually managed to put it past the keeper to make it 6-1. A comprehensive victory for Valley, hopefully they can continue the good form.

Team: Aidan Dineen, Paudy Noonan, Niall Riordan, Brendan Hickey, Damien O' Farrell, Aidan Hogan, Gordon Bryan, Jim Lane, Billy Carr Jnr, Terrence Rumbley, John Carr.

Subs Used: Shane Kearney and Sean Twomey.

Best for Valley: Shane Kearney, Aidan Hogan and Terrence Rumbley.

9th November, Premier League, Valley Park, Valley Rangers v Ardmore - 0 vs 1

Valley were hoping to improve their league status last Sunday after drawing their first league game 3-3 against Gortroe, Ardmore were next and it certainly was not going to be an easy task with players out through suspension and others injured. Valley were defending against a strong breeze for the first half. Both sides started well and had opportunities to go in front. Gordon Bryan came close with his stunning effort from outside the box; it was only the post that denied what looked like to be a certain goal. Ardmore too had their chances to take the lead but man of the match Aidan Dineen was out bravely every time to stop anything that came at him, even from 6 yards out. At the other end a great Billy Carr run presented Terrence Rumbley with an opportunity, however, his shot just went to the wrong side of the post. As the half progressed Ardmore began to get on top and were applying a lot of pressure on the Valley defence, Valley did well to keep them scoreless by halftime.

With the wind at their backs in the second half Valley were hoping to improve on their first half performance. John Carr was doing very well for Valley up front along with Damien O' Farrell on the wing and Sean Twomey in defence. Damo was putting in some great ball into the Ardmore penalty area but the physical dominance of Ardmore was very noticeable who were more than able to deal with crosses. Ardmore were still creating chances and but for some good defending and excellent goal keeping could taken the lead early in the half. Valley, who were now starting to win the midfield battle created some chances of their own, the hungry John Carr came close with a good effort. Valley defended well for most of the match, but a lapse in concentration left Ardmore in to steal the game in the last minute, sickening to say the least.

Team: Aidan Dineen, Sean Twomey, Niall Riordan, Paudy Noonan, Damien O' Farrell, Brendan Hickey, Gordon Bryan, Billy Carr Jnr, Aidan Hogan, Terrence Rumbley, John Carr.

Subs Used: Jim Lane.

Best for Valley: Aidan Dineen, John Carr and Sean Twomey.

The club is also organising a trip to Glasgow for the 30th of January to see a Celtic game. The cost for booking is 100 Euro payable to Sean Twomey by next Sunday.

19th October, Tony Bolger Cup, Valley Park, Valley Rangers v Inch - 3 vs 1

Valley reached the Tony Bolger Cup semi-final beating Clashmore and Gortroe along the way. Inch were next in line for Valley to play. Valley were in the driving seat from the beginning and were well on top throughout the first half. Valley's defence was excellent and midfield dominant. Valley had some good chances and could have punished Inch earlier on in the game. Gordon had a few opportunities unfortunately he couldn't find the target.

Alan Carr's reading of the play was excellent from the goal. He was out to gather every loose ball that went over the Valley defence. Brendan Hickey is fitting very well into his new position as right wing back and was supplying some great ball for our strikers. Terrence Rumley came close went there was a goal mouth scramble in the Inch box but his shot went left of the post.

As half time neared it seemed that the teams would be going in level, however Rumley thoughts differed and when he received a great flick over the top from Colin he volley it first time from outside the box leaving the Inch keeper stranded. Valley were pleased to be 1 - 0 at half time but knew that Inch would come out fighting.

And that's exactly what happened. Valley matched that aggression for most of the half, the Valley midfield was outstanding in particular the tireless work of Aidan Hogan shone out. Inch threw everything at the Valley but the defence stood strong and Alan Carr was very solid in goal. Tempers were raised in parts of the game but control was kept throughout the match.

Eventually Inch's hard work paid off when Valley briefly lost concentration and left Inch in for the equalising goal. Valley could have easily caved in at this stage and extra time was imminent, however with 10 minutes to go Brendan Hickey got on to the end of a Gordon Bryan flick on and the small man scored a well deserved goal.

5 minutes later Valley won a penalty after an Inch player handled the ball in the penalty area, regularly penalty taker Billy Carr was once again cool under pressure and he sealed the match for Valley. Valley will meet either play Kilworth or Brideview in the final.

Team (3-5-2): Alan Carr, John Ronayne, Paudy Noonan, Niall Riordan, Damien O' Farrell, Brendan Hickey, Gordon Bryan(Capt), Billy Carr Jnr, Aidan Hogan, Colin Hogan, Terrence Rumbley. Subs: Brian Hogan for Terence Rumley. Sean Twomey & Jim Lane for Gordon Bryan & Aidan Hogan.

Best for Valley: Brendan Hickey, Aidan Hogan and Alan Carr.

12th October, Liam Fitzgerald Cup, Valley Park, Valley Rangers v Gortroe - 3 vs 0

Valley played Gortroe in the replay of the first leg of the Liam Fitzgerald Cup last Sunday morning. Valley started the brighter and were playing some classy football, passing well and creating chances. Damo was putting in some very teasing balls from the left flank.

Colin (waster) Hogan and Sean Twomey both came close from Damien's crosses, but they couldn't direct their headers on target. Noonan's distribution of the ball from sweeper was excellent.

With the pressure that Valley were applying it was only a matter of time before a goal came, it came when Hogan chase down a ball that was going to the keeper, Colin won the race and was brought down for a penalty. Clinical finishing from Billy Carr meant that Valley took an early lead. Terrence Rumbley also came close on a few occasions and he had a goal disallowed for offside (again).

Valley's second goal came when John Ronayne's mis-flighted free kick from half way somehow found its way to the back of net, John is calling himself Ronaldino nowadays. Brendan Hickey weaved his way through the Gortroe defence but his finish didn't credit the run. An o.g. gave Valley a 3-0 lead going in at half time when an unlucky Gortroe defender headed passed his kepper from an Alan Carr kick-out. Valley certainly felt confident going in at half time.

Valley didn't have it so easy in the second half with Gortroe dominating this half. Valley were caught day dreaming after half time and left Gortroe in for a soft early goal. Gortroe could have had a few more if it were not for the outstanding play of Noonan and Ronayne in defence and a few good saves from Carr between the posts.

Riordan even nearly scored on Carr lucky his misdirected clearance came back off the post. Billy Carr had a great opportunity to seal the game for Valley when he received a beautifully flighted freekick from Hogan, unfortunately he wasn't as clinical on this occasion with his header as he was earlier.

Gortroe also came close with headers on a few occasions. Caples lucked lively when he came on and his hard work nearly paid off when he beat the keeper to the ball but he drove the ball over the bar from a tight angle. It was a battle to the very end, but Valley dug deep and managed to hold out for a 3-1 victory.

Team: Alan Carr, Paudy Nonnan, John Ronayne, Niall Riordan, Damien O'Farrell, Donal Caples, Gordon Bryan, Sean Twomey, Billy Carr Jnr, Terrence Rumbley, Colin Hogan.

Best for Valley: Paudy Noonan, John Ronayne and Colin Hogan.

Fixture for next Sunday: Tony Bolger Cup, Valley A's vs Inch at 11:00 in Cappoquinn.

5th October Liam Fitzgerald Cup, Gortroe - Gortroe 2 Valley Rangers 3(Match Abandoned after 75 mins)

Valley took on Gortroe Sunday morning in the first leg of the Liam Fitzgerald Cup, once again a good game of football was produced by these too teams, however the match was abandoned after 75 minutes when the referee picked up an ankle injury. Damien O'Farrell and Shane Kearney did the scoring for Valley.

Damo opened the scoring in the first half with a cracker; he won the ball in midfield and hammered it home into the bottom corner from outside the box. It wasn't long though before Gortroe came back and with a quickly taken freekick caught out the Valley defence, the cross resulted in a goal. Shane Kearney was making sure Valley stayed on top when he beat the offside trap and finished well. Gortroe once again brought the sides level when they easily got through the Valley defence and finished with ease.

Aidan Hogan came close when his header came back off the post. It was that man Shane Kearney again who gave Valley the lead for the third time he received a great long range pass from Gordon and his 18 yard volley left the Gortroe keeper with no chance.

It was more of the same exciting football in the second half without the goals. Gortroe came close from a corner and Terence Rumbley was unlucky when his goal was disallowed after he flicked on an Aidan Hogan shot, Rumbley was deemed offside. Aidan claims it was going into the top corner anyway but nobody believes him.

Thirty minutes into the second half referee Willy Collins picked up an ankle injury and felt that he couldn't carry on, so the match was abandoned. Valley are not quite sure whether this result will stand or not so watch this space.

Team (3-5-2): Alan Carr, Paudy Noonan, Niall Riordan, John Ronayne, Brian Hogan, Damien O' Farrell, Aidan Hogan, Billy Carr Jnr, Gordon Bryan, Terence Rumbley, Shane Kearney. Subs Used: Sean Twomey.

Best for Valley: Shane Kearney, Damien O'Farrell and Brian Hogan.

The club would like to wish Willy Collins a speedy recovery. Congratulations to Jim Lane on getting engaged and the best of luck for the future.

Check the Red House League Notes for match fixtures.

21st September, FAI Junior Cup, Valley Park, Valley v Bohemians - 0 vs 3

Not such a good day at Valley Park last Sunday, Valley took on Waterford side Bohemians in the first round of the FAI Junior Cup. The first half was dominated by Bohs, they had Valley running in circles for most of the half, passing the ball and finding space at will. The Valley defence held out well for most of the half thanks to some great individual performances from Ronayne and Noonan but it was no surprise when Bohs got the their first after Valley lost possession yet again, this time Bohs punished us with a left foot shot from outside the box which Alan Carr could do nothing about. Valley came in a half time a bit dejected but knew that it was all but over and still had a chance to get back into the game.

It was more of the same classy football from Bohs in the second half. Their defence just could not be broken down and the Valley midfield was closed down as soon as they got the ball. With the quality of ball, which was being played to the Bohs front men and the movement off the ball, it was just a matter of time before they stuck again this came when Bohs got in behind the Valley defence and sent a great ball across the box, clinical finishing from the Bohs midfielder. Valley started to apply some more pressure and Sean Twomey was unlucky not to get the break of the ball in the oppositions area. Bohs turned the screw in the Valley coffin with 5 minutes to go when they again got inside the Valley defence and made it all look so easy. It wasn't that Valley played baldly last Sunday but more that they simply outclassed by a very well trained, organised team and this game will certainly be of benefit to Valley.

Team (3-5-2): Alan Carr, John Ronayne, Niall Riordan, Paudy Noonan, Damien O' Farrell, Brian Hogan, Gordan Bryan (Capt), Billy Carr Jnr, Aidan Hogan, Colin Hogan, Terrence Rumbley.
Subs Used: Donal Caples, Sean Twomey, and Brendan Hickey.

Best for Valley: Paudy Noonan and John Ronayne.

Congratulations to Liam Kearney on scoring a glorious volley for Cork City on his debut last Friday night, Liam came on as a sub at half time and did the business for City at the Shed end although he will be disappointed City lost 2-1, it was brilliant to see him score. Keep up the good work Liam.

Tony Bolger Cup, Gortroe 0 - Valley Rangers 3 (After Extra-Time)

Valley played Gortroe last Sunday on Youghal's immaculate pitch. Apart from the rain this was a perfect day and a perfect venue to play good football and that's exactly what was displayed. Valley started slow and soaked up a lot of pressure in the first 10 minutes. It wasn't long though before Valley got into the swing of things and started to create chances, the Hogan brothers coming close on a few occasions. Bryan's imaginative play in midfield helped produce chances for Valley throughout the game, with big man Jim Lane winning every header that came his way and John Rumbley solid as a rock in defence. Alan Carr made a marvellous save from a Gortroe break away, but nothing was getting passed this man. The teams came in level at half time, which was a fair reflection on how the game was going both teams playing well in phases.

Valley got on top of things in the seccond half stringing together some useful moves but just couldn't seem to punish Gortroe. Gortroe's offside trap was working well for them and despite the abundant runs from Valley's strikers Gortroe defence couldn't be broken down, our strikers must have felt that it was like banging their heads off a brick wall. Bryan came close on one occasion but the Gortroe keeper saved well. At the other end Gortroe created a few chances but the Valley defence coped well, thanks to the good organisation of Noonan and Alan Carr's excellent keeping. Extra-time awaited the teams, as it always felt during the course of the game the teams ended up level at fulltime.

The first half of extra-time was totally dominated by Gortroe. The Valley defence was a shambles and if it were not for that man Alan Carr again and Gortroe squandering many an opportunity Valley could have been out of the game. It was a different story for the second half of extra-time, Valley were a team on a mission to make the most of the good fortune which they had earlier. Relentless pressure from Valley eventually paid off when Seamus Hogan knocked a great ball into Bryan who made no mistake with an impressive finish. Some great work by the Hogan brothers helped make the game safe when Aidan knocked in his first of the season after the keeper saved from Colin. Quick thinking from Aidan nearly brought about his second after he tried to lob the keeper who got a touch to it, however it fell to brother Brian who neatly got inside the keeper and was taken down for a penalty. Gordon had the responsibility over the spot kick. He sent the keeper the wrong way and tucked it away nicely into the corner. Valley go marching on now to the semi-final of the Cup with the hope that glory awaits.

Best for Valley: Alan Carr, Gordon Bryan and Colin Hogan.

Team: Alan Carr, John Rumbley, Paudy Noonan, Niall Riordan, Seamus Hogan, Aidan Hogan, Jim Lane, Gordon Bryan, Damien O' Farrell, Colin Hogan, Brian Hogan.
Subs Used: Sean Twomey for John Rumley.

Treasurer (Con-Artist) Derry O' Leary would also like me to remind everyone that membership is due. Valley will have no match next weekend because of the All-Ireland final and training is postponed till the following week.

All the Latest News 27th August 2003

Report by Niall Riordan (PRO)

With the new season underway adult and underage teams will be hoping that this will be a prosperous season for the club. Valley A team will once again be optimistic to go one step further this year and take the prestigious league title, which has eluded the club with so long, in fact with 21 years (too long!).

Valley Rangers AGM

The AGM took place on August 7th in which some good ideas where brought to the attention of the club by the few people which attended. The club will be trying to put these ideas into action during the coming season, but its going to take the hard work and effort of everyone involved.

As we all know the club needs money to survive, this year membership for adult players will be 40 euro, 30 euro for college students and 20 euro for secondary school students, payment for referees is also included in this. The club is also selling tickets for the red house league draw, tickets are 30 euro and contestants are entered into four separate draws in which the prizes are excellent. We would encourage all adult and the parents of underage players to contribute. Also letters will be sent out to the various businesses in the locality with regard to sponsorship and we are hoping for a positive response.

It was agreed that it was unfair to have the same people getting the pitch ready for games every week, so it was decided that a list of the players will be drawn up and two different people each week will organise the pitch for the various home fixtures. A list of people washing the jerseys will also be made up and everyone will have their turn to wash them, apologies Shane but you cannot wash them every week this year, you will have to wait your turn.

Chairperson for the year is John Lonergan, Vice-Chairperson is Paul Kenneally, Treasurer is Derry O' Leary (dodgy character), Secretary is Jim Lane, PRO for the year is Niall Riordan, Assistatn PRO for the year is Seamus Hogan and PRO for the juveniles is Diarmuid Hogan. Sean Twomey is taking over as manager for the A team and Billy Carr as manager for the B team. We would like to wish both managers and the officers of the club the very best for the season. We would also like to thank last year's officers and managers for a job well done.

The adult club will be entering into the following competitions this season:
Both teams enter the Tony Bolger Cup, both teams enter the Dungarvan Tyre, a Valley mixture enter the Liam Fitzgerald Cup and again a Valley mixture enter the FAI Junior Cup.

Valley A Pre-Season Friendly - Valley Rangers 0 - Inch Utd. 3

Valley played Inch last Thursday night in a pre-season friendly that will have benefited both sides immensely. Valley started brightly passing the ball nicely and keeping possession well, however it was not long before the Valley defence fell asleep and left Inch in for a soft early goal against the run of play. Up front both Caples and Rumbley were working hard and Jim Lanes excellent distribution of the ball in the middle of the field helped steady the ship for Valley, down the right Kenneally was putting in some very testing balls for the Inch defence to deal with, unfortunately, Valley never seemed to have the players in the right position to convert. Much of the first half was fought in mid-field with Inch getting slightly on top and Dineen came to the rescue on a few occasions. It was from a long defence-splitting ball that Inch's second goal came. Terrance Rumbley won a penalty for Valley towards the end of the first half. Damien O' Farrell was the brave man to step up and take the responsibility of the spot kick, however, the keeper guessed the right way to save and save Damo's rebound. Damo informed me that on reflection deciding what celebration he was going to perform rather than were he was going to place the ball might not have been such a good idea.

The second half saw some changes made and the repositioning of a few players most notably Alan Carr taking over from Aidan Dineen in goal. This was a much better half for Valley, the defence settled down and the offside trap was working well. Rumbley and John Carr were looking threatening upfront and certainly seemed to have the beating of the Inch defence. Valley piled on the pressure and won numerous corners, an opportunity arose when Hogan drilled one of these corners low across the Inch six yard box, regrettably it fell to Riordan whose left foot volley blazed the ball over the crossbar and into the next field, memories of Ballyduff last season (a centre half at his best! Inch however still had the better in midfield, the Valley defence was under severe pressure and if it were not for the superb display from Alan Carr between the sticks Valley would have been out of the game. At the other end Rumbley came close after receiving a great 40-yard pass from Damo now at left back but the Inch keeper saved well. Caples also came close after some some electric play between himself and Hogan, when I say close I mean his shot came close to being as bad as Riordans. A defensive error saw Inch slip in for a well-taken third goal that Carr could do nothing about. When the full time whistle blew I think everyone was relived, as it seem that fitness (or lack of it) was catching up on most players.

Team: Aidan Dineen, Dermot Hogan, Brendan Hickey, Niall Riordan, Alan Carr, Damien O' Farrell, Jim Lane, Colin Hogan, Paul Keneally, Terrance Rumbley, Donal Caples. Subs Used: John Carr, Billy Carr, Zestis and Sean Twomey.

Valley A's stroll through to the next round of Tony Bolger Cup. Valley Rangers 2 - Clashmore 0

Valley had a relatively easy win over Clashmore on Sunday. Playing with a slight breeze and the blistering Sun Valley made the most of their advantage in the first half. Valley were on top in every department throughout the match. Valley's passing and movement was excellent. The Valley defence was never put under any real pressure, the Trojan work of Aidan Hogan at centre midfield was evident along with the other Hogan (Colin) and Rumbley terrorising the Clashmore defence upfront. It wasn't long before the persistence of Rumbley saw Valley take the lead, Rumbley chased down a weak Clashmore backpass he rounded the keeper and finished with ease. Rumbey is back!! The nifty footwork of Colin Hogan gave him a great chance inside the Clashmore box and he may have felt a little hard done by not to get a penalty. Donal Caples got brought down (twice) for a penalty after some great running, Damien steped up once more but there was no mistakes this time he slotted the ball into the corner, the celebration wasn't bad either.

It was more of the same from Valley in the second half without the goals. Brian Hogan was weaving in and out challenges for fun, himself and Caples must have been black and blue by the end of the match. Brilliant running by the eldest Hogan brought him into a great position, he unselfishly passed the ball to Rumbley who tapped the ball in but the referee deemed him off-side, Rumley had a few words with the ref after this and was duly sent off. With Valley now down to 10 men, the Valley defence was under more pressure however they dealt with everything that Clashmore threw at them. Fullbacks Hickey and Farrell cleaning up, the only scare coming from a Clashmore break in which the post saved Valley other than this it was a very quite afternoon for the small man in goal. Colin Hogan was again unlucky not to get a penalty when he appeared to be taken out of it inside the Clashmore box.

All in all it was a handy win for Valley who could easily have won by more, but it was nice to see some good football being played and to see Valley fighting for every ball till the final whistle blew. The harsh dismissal of Rumbley was the only disappointment.

Best for Valley: Hickey, Farrell and the Hogan brothers.

Team: Alan Carr, Seamus Hogan, Brendan Hickey, Niall Riordan, Damien Farrell, Donal Caples, Jim Lane, Aidan Hogan, Brian Hogan, Colin Hogan, Terrance Rumbley. Subs Used: Paudy Noonan and Sean Twomey.

On behalf of the club I would also like to wish Brendan Hickey the very best luck with his singing career, Brendan can be seen performing coverversions of Madonna in Ballyduff on Saturday nights, ear protection and eye protection will be provided if Brendan gets carried away.

Valley B Pre-Season Friendly - VALLEY RANGERS 1 KILWORTH CELTIC 2

Valley B's played their first game of the season on Sunday last in Conna. The match started brightly for the home side with some neat crisp passing. Valley won a corner on 25 minutes and Diarmuid Hogan crashed a header against the upright. Kilworth were reduced to ten men late on in the second half when a late tackle of JP Flynn saw the referee show a straight red card. Teams went in at the break at 0-0.

Early in the second half, slack marking from Valley let the Kilworth striker in and he made no mistake in putting the ball in the back of the net. Valley fought back well and a looping header from 12.126 yards into a strong cross wind by striker Diarmuid Hogan levelled the game at 1-1.

Kilworth got a free with 20 minutes left, a long delivery from the centre half bounced just in front of keeper Aidan Dineen and into the back of Valley's net. Kilworth held out for a 2-1 win.

Best for Valley were Mike Walsh, Lawerance O'Connor and Diarmuid Hogan.

Team: Aidan Dineeen, John Carr, Lawerance O'Connor, Stephen Hartigan, Paul Kenneally, JP Flynn, Mike Walsh, Billy Carr, John Mulcahy, Diarmuid Hogan, Kevin Cotter. Sub: Seamus Noonan for JP Flynn on 35 mins.

Best wishes from all the lads to JP Flynn. We hope you make a quick recovery from your injuries.

Great to see so many people turn up to see the B's in action last Sunday, according to our ex-PRO Paul, it was to see him make his B team debut......

27th April, Premier League, Valley Park, Valley v Brideview United - 2 vs 1

This was our last league game of the season. To still be in with a shout of winning the title at this stage just shows how open it was this season. Valley had to beat Brideview and hope Lismore did not win in their game against Cappaquin. If Brideview won they knew that they would at least have a playoff game to win the league. So, it was all to play for!

Valley had a full squad of players for this one and were the brighter side at the start. Caplice and Noonan caused all sorts of problems for the Brideview defence and Carr Jnr and Bryan were totally dominating things in midfield. Caplice had a few great chances earlier on. Valley had a few minor scary moments at the back but both Hickey and Twomey were well on top.

The opening goal came after a great run by Carr Jnr into the Brideview penalty area. The ball bounced around a bit before Caplice sent it on its way. It was a goal that Valley totally deserved as they were well on top.

After the goal, Valley sat back a little but Brideview did not have any real chance. Half time came and we knew that we had them rattled! Carr Jnr just said more of the same and we would be sorted.

The second half began with Valley playing into the breeze. Brideview began to get on top with Gordie tiring a little in the middle!! Even though they were on top, they did not create any real chances that Fitzy would have to deal with. However, Valley were hit with blow when the referee awarded them a penalty. Fitzy almost saved it but it just crept under his arms. Brideview were now well on top and were looking for the goal that would send them into a playoff with Lismore.

They threw everything bar the kitchen sink at us. However, Valley had a few counter attacks from which Gordie missed a golden chance after some fine work. Another attack in the dying minutes saw Kearney have a shot that came of Twomey and went wide. We then forced a corner. From this, Twomey got a touch and Niall Riordan finished it to the net for a sweet sweet goal!!! The final whistle went soon after. We knew that Lismore were winning but it was still nice to beat Brideview.

All in all it was not a bad season, though the league was there for the taking and yet again, we failed to win it. Some of the games that we drew earlier were the ones that killed us. If we managed to win one of the those, we'd now be the champions. But, it was not to be and at least Brideview did not win it!!

Team: Shane Fitzgerald, Alan Carr, Brendan Hickey, Sean Twomey, John Rohan, Jim Lane (Shane Kearney), Billy Carr Jnr, Gordon Bryan, Damien Farrell, Paudie Noonan (Colin Hogan), Donal Caplice.

13th April, Dungarvan Tyre Cup, Valley Park, Valley v Bride View - 2 vs 0

Valley got one over on their near rivals in a close and highly controversial cup quarter final. Valley had a full compliment of players except Colin Hogan who mysteriously could not make it!

Brideview were really up for this game as well. The game was played in terrible conditions and it was a tribute to the two teams that such a good game was played.

Valley played some very good football in the first half but failed to create any real chances. Brideview had one early chance but they shot wide. That was about as close as they were to go after that.

Nil Nil was a fair score at half time. Some of Valley's play was really good and their passing was exceptional given the conditions. Hickey just told the lads that more of the same and it would not be long before we nicked one. We also had the advantage of a strong wind behind us.

The second half started and Valley were well on top. Noonan was being a constant threat (When he was not on his backside) and when he was fouled in the box, we had a penalty. Up stepped Billy Carr who slotted it away with ease. Brideview then proceeded to exchange a few words with the Ref and after Paudie was again fouled in the penalty area, they had their second player sent off. Billy Carr again slotted away the penalty to make it two nil.

An easy win all in all but its always good to beat Bride View. We are now in the Cup semi-final and are the only premier league team left. So we have a good chance of winning it! Moment of the game was when Fitzy came so close with his kick out!

Team: Shane Fitzgerald, Alan Carr, Brendan Hickey, Sean Twomey, Jim Lane, Damien Farrell, John Rohan, Billy Carr Jnr, Gordon Bryan (Shane Kearney), Paudie Noonan, Donal Caplice.

5th April, Premier League, Ballyduff, Ballyduff v Valley - 0 vs 4

Valley had to win this to stay in contention for the league. After soaking up a bit of early pressure from Ballyduff, Valley got on top and an early goal from Gordie helped settle the side. We then went on the score three more in a great performance. We have one game left now against Brideview. If we win that, Lismore have to slip up against Cappaquin for us to have any chance. Here's hoping our friends in Cappaquin do us a really big favour!

23rd February, Dungarvan Tyre Cup, Valley Park, Valley v Inch - 1 vs 0

Valley progressed into the next round of the Cup in this tight but gripping game. The game was played on a beautifully rolled pitch that was perfect for some good football.

Valley started the game well passing the ball well and were rewarded when Twomey headed in a fine goal. Valley were very lucky when an Inch effort hit the bar and came out. One Valley supporter admitted that the ball had crossed the line so Valley were lucky in this instance.

The second half was more even with neither team getting a stronghold on the game. Inch had a few good chances but were wasteful in front of goal and also some good goalkeeping from O' Leary kept them out. Valley missed a few chances too after some beautiful passing.

Valley though will be happy with the win and now progress into the semi-final.

Team: Donal O' Leary, Alan Carr, Brendan Hickey, Niall Riordan, Jim Lane, Damien Farrell, Carr Jnr, Sean Twomey, Brian Hogan, Paudie Noonan, Colin Hogan.

16th February, Premier League, Valley Park, Valley v Kilworth Celtic - 3 vs 0

Valley kept the pressure on the top few teams in the league with this win against a feeble Kilworth team. Kilworth are up for relegation this season and its no wonder why with their performance against us yesterday. They were a pity!

They only had 8 players at the start and Valley took full advantage with Billy Carr scoring following some fine work by Noonan up front. Kilworth then managed to snuff out all of Valley's other attacks in a terrible first half. To Valley's defense, it was very hard to concentrate against a team like Kilworth.

A good tongue lashing from Hickey inspired the troops and Dan the man scored a second goal with a sweet strike with his left peg. However, the goal of the game came from Brian Hogan when he took on four Kilworth players and then finished with a great finish into the top right corner for a fantastic goal.

Soon after, Kilworth were put out of their misery when Valley agreed to blow up early. It was an easy victory and still keeps us in the title hunt. Good to see our new centre half Donal O' Leary play so well in his first game in that position. So much for him not having a clue what to do! Also, well done to Rumley who managed to keep a clean sheet and not throw any into his own net!

Team: John Rumley, Alan Carr, Brendan Hickey, Donal O' Leary, Jim Lane, Damien Farrell, Carr Jnr, Sean Twomey, Brian Hogan, Paudie Noonan, Donal Caplice.

2nd February, Dungarvan Tyre Cup, Ballyduff, Ballyduff v Valley - 1 vs 3

After last weeks demoralising loss to arch rivals Bride View, it was very important that we get back to winning ways. This was a cup game and both teams were missing a few regulars. It was a chance for Valley's fringe players to impress.

Valley went one up when Paudie was first to react to a great Brian Hogan shot. Paudie could not miss by all accounts! The ref then awarded a penalty to ballyduff which they scored.

Valley however producted a good display after this. Billy Carr Jnr scoring a penalty after some fine work from Colin Hogan. Unfortunetly, Colin got a red card after this but he had done enough at that stage! His younger brother then secured the win later. Paudie crossed for Damien to flick on and Brian was there to finish it to the net.

According to Gordie, Bryan Hogan was the star of the show with John Rohan, Niall Riordan and of course Gordie and Carr Jnr all playing well.

This was a great win and hopefully things will go well in the next round as well.

26th January, Premier League, Valley Park, Valley v Bride View - 0 vs 1

In what was a very importany game, Valley could find themselves hard done by, to lose this one. Valley had a full squad except for Alan Carr who was suspended.

Gordie got the nod in midfield while Kearney was back up front along side Caplice. Valley started the brighter and had Bride View on the back foot. Carr Jnr and Gordie in particular were playing like men possessed and were supplying some great balls for Kearney and Caplice. Kearney had a great chance when put through by a long kick out from Rumley but the Bride View keeper did well to save it.

Valley dominated the first half and Kearney again should have scored when he did not connect properly and went close again with a shot that just cleared the cross bar. However disaster struck when Bride View scored from their only attack. Rumley letting in a rather speculative effort. Going in at half time one nil down was a real sickener after the way we played.

We knew that we had played the better football but unfortunatly, the scoreboard did not reflect that. We went back out in the second half determined to continue pressing. This we tried, but Bride View were now protecting their lead and did not let us play our flowing football in the second half. Valley did not really create that many chances. Bride View then counter-attacked and had a few half chances. However, Valley's season was summed up when with a few seconds left. Kearney had a left foot shot from a narrow angle come off the post. How it stayed out, I'll never know.

All in all, it was very disappointing but as someone said afterwards, the league is not over yet. If we beat Bride View in the return match, it would be better than drawing with them twice so we will have to wait and see.

Man of the Match: Gordie for his first half display. He must have lost at least two stone with all the running he did!!

Team: Rumley, Lane (Farrell), Hickey, Riordon, Ronayne, Noonan, Carr Jnr, Bryan, Colin Hogan (Aiden Hogan), Kearney, Caplice (Twomey)

26th December, John O' Leary Testimonial, Valley Park, Conna & Ballynoe v Curraglass - 1 vs 0

On a beautiful, morning for football, a massive crowd turned up for Johnno. It was a great tribute to the man that such a big crowd turned up. There was around 25 players turned up for Curraglass and around 20 for Conna and Ballynoe. A large crowd turned up also to watch the game with everyone giving some money towards charity.

The game itself was also very competetive with both sets of teams giving their all. Some players said afterwards that it was much tougher than a normal Sunday league game. I would agree with this! There was numerous substitutions during the game to give everyone a rest!

It was great to see some of the old faces back playing soccer. The likes of Paddy Lane who showed his class again, Dick Leahy, Ger and Donal Lynch, Pa Flynn, Sunny Keeffe and Eoin Keeffe who was very impressive at the back. The gaffer Lonergan was back too although he did more kicking than playing! Noel Carr was there, Eoin Riordan was there and of course Liameen was back!. Great to see so many people there playing. The most busiest people in the game were the two goalies. Rumley who did the most entertaining kept a clean sheet. How he did this is beyone me. I think he had some help from Johnno!! Aiden Dinneen in the other end was my man of the match. He was simply outstanding.

The game was 0-0 at half time. There was no shortage of chances though. JP FLynn hit the post with the Curraglass defence doing very well to clear the rebound. Liam Kearney showed a bit of class when his shot was brilliantly saved by Dinneen in goals. Curraglass too had a chance when Rumley fumbled. Somehow, Curraglass did not get the ball over the line even though the net shook.

Half time came as a great relief to everyone!

The second half was more of the same with Gordie having a few chances saved again by the impressive Dinneen and Rumley again on fine form when he fumbled another one only to be half saved by Sunny on the line when, insted of heading it over the bar, he headed it against the bar and Rumley then managed to tap it over. However, the biggest cheer of the day came when the only goal was scored to save us the embarrassment of taking penalties! Ger Lynch was the hero of the day when he struck the ball sweetly with this left foot into the bottom right corner to give Dinneen no chance.

Curraglass rallied at this stage and had a succession of corners where Noel Carr came close as did Ted but Rumley was down well to save. He also made a mighty save when a Curraglass shot was deflected. The final whistle went and Conna and Ballynoe were the winnners. It was a great game and that was the main thing. It did not matter who won the game as long as everyone enjoyed it. Conna and Ballynoe captain Eoin "The Leaf" Keeffe accepted the beautiful glass trophy, from John's brother, Donal. Donal thanked everyone for turning up and said that John would have been very very proud. Eoin thanked the Leary family for being there and also thanked everyone else for turning up. The trophy will now reside in The Fishermens Pub, Conna.

John O' Leary's Testimonial 26th December, Valley Park @ 11.30

This game is being held in memory of Johnno. Everyone that knew the man is asked to turn out on St. Stephen's day. The match is on at 11.30 but everyone is asked to be there at 11. Everyone is getting a game for 30 minutes and it will be Conna against Curraglass with the winning team receiving a lovely tropy that will reside in the Plough, Curraglass or in Twomey's, Conna depending on who wins. Hope to see ye all there

22nd December, Premier League, Valley v Ballyduff - 0 vs 1

Another poor performance lead to our second defeat in two games which has left our title hopes hanging by a thread. Valley were missing Aiden Hogan but had Colin Hogan and Gordon Bryan back so had as strong a squad as ever this season.

Ballyduff who had earlier beaten Lismore 5-0 also has a full squad and were well up for this one. They were very organised and were out to stifle Valley. The game in general was poor. Valley never got into their style of play and Ballyduff were on top for most of the match.

After a brief scuffle, Alan Carr was very unlucky to get sent off.

Anyway, gordie had a few half chances that were never going in. Overall, Ballyduff had more chances and we were very lucky to go in 0-0 at half time

Kearney came on for Caplice in the second half but we were under pressure in midfield. We were getting destroyed in this area and they were causing all sorts of problems for us at the back. They had a succession of corners and it was only a matter of time before they scored from one. This they did to leave Valley's title hopes floundering.

Overall, it was a very very poor performance. But and its a big but, we still have to play Tallow twice as well as Lismore next Sunday. If we will all these games and the rest, we will not be too far away. Things will have to improve though!

Team: Rumley, A.Carr, Hickey, Riordon, Ronayne, Lane, Carr Jnr, Twomey, Noonan (Colin Hogan), Bryan, Caplice (Kearney)

15th December, Premier League, Ardmore, Ardmore v Valley - 1 vs 0

Valley lost this one after a dismal performance.

8th December, Premier League, Valley Park, Valley v Cappaquin - 3 vs 2

Another league game finsihing 3-2...Yes but this one could be the result of the season. Beating the reigning league champions is one step further toward winning the first league title in 20 years.

Valley started the game without Kearney who was injured. Bryan was also on the bench as Derry had found the money to fly him home especially for this game. It was to prove a worthy investment!

Valley started at a frantic pace. They came out of the traps gunning for blood. They dominated the first half and should have gone in at the break 4 or 5 goals ahead. Twomey and Carr Jnr destroyed the cappaquin midfield and Noonan and Caplice were tearing the renowned Cappaquin defence apart. Noonan in particular must get some praise for his performance. He was outstanding and Cappaquin had no answer for him.

Valley scored the first goal quiet easily. Take nothing away from Caplice though. He deserved his goal (even though the Cappaquin keeper gave it to him on a plate) because he worked tirelessly throughout the game. This was a real boost for us as we rarely get presents from Cappaquin. Rather than sitting back and absorbing pressure, Twomey, Carr Jnr, Lane and Hogan played superbly and when the second goal arrived, it was no more than we deserved. Fantastic work from Carr Jnr resulted in their keeper making a fantastic save from Noonan, before Carr Jnr followed up to put in the rebound. So, we were motoring at this stage. Although we had been here before in the past few weeks. Two up in the first half, we had surrendered that lead three times before. We did not want to lose this one. However, just before half time disaster occured. Hickey made an outstanding clearance. In the process of winning the ball he collided with the Cappaquin striker who went down like a tonne of bricks. Of course the ref pointed to the spot. Cappaquin scored to make it 2-1 at half time. Apart from this minor blip before half time, I must say that it was probably the best performance I have ever seen this team produce.

The second half would be much tougher though. Cappaquin were going to throw everything at us. They had nothing to lose now. The half stared with us under a little bit of pressure. However, our defence of Hickey and Riordan, Carr and Ronayne did not put a foot wrong limiting Cappaquin to a few half chances. Even Fat Rumley in goals was playing well!

Enter Gordon Bryan. With us under a little pressure he created a little magic until he was fouled in a dangerous position for a free kick. I yelled "You take it Billy", but of course our Gord was having none of it. Up he stepped. Big arse and all, to smack in a belter. Their keeper on a good day would have saved it but take nothing away from the man. It was a fabalous strike. We were now up 3-1 against the League champions. Things were looking good.

It must be said though that this was against the run of play. Cappaquin were the better team in that second half. However, for a change, our defence performed very well. They kept out everthing. Cappaquin though scored from a corner towards the end but nothing was going to deny Valley on this day. The final whistle was a slight relief though. All in all, we derved the win. We played some mighty stuff in the first half and worked extremly hard in the second half. Man of the Match: Paudie Noonan just because we give out to him so often for playing shite so this time we have to give the man some credit. Well done Paudie. Keep it up!

Team: Rumley, A.Carr (Carr Snr), Hickey, Riordon, Ronayne, Lane (Bryan), Carr Jnr, Twomey, Hogan, Noonan, Caplice (Kearney)

17th November, Premier League, Fermoy, Accrington Celtic v Valley - 2 vs 3

No report available on this game as I was suspended and did not attend the game. However, a little birdie told me that it was another poor performance with the Valley defence looking very shaky. Again we went two up with goals from Caplice and Aiden Hogan who is filling in for all us suspended players. However we all hope that he stays with us. Valley let this lead slip conceding two very poor goals. Noonan for a change saved the day with 10 minutes to go to get a vital win for Valley.

10th November, Premier League, Valley Park, Valley v Kilworth - 2 vs 2

No Report available as I was suspended again!! New signing Aiden Hogan and Carr Jnr scored the goals I think. We were two up when we let the lead slip before half time. Must be two points dropped. Poor Performance.

3rd November, Premier League, Valley Park, Valley v Lismore - 3 vs 2

This was a very important game for both sides. With both teams really going for the league title this year, it was going to be vital. Lismore fielded a very strong team while Valley were missing only Bryan!

Valley were a bit disorganised at the start with the 11 O' Clock kick off throwing a few people! The game started at a frantic pace. The battle in midfield was mighty with hogan, carr, twomey and lane holding more than their own. Valley took the lead after about 15 minutes when there was a bit of a scramble. The ball broke to Caplice close to the end line. Somehow, he managed to curl (it was a cross) it into the top corner! One nil up against Lismore. We had been in this position may times before only to lose it time and time again against Lismore.

Straight from the kick off, Kearney dispossessed the Lismore defender and was straight through on goal but his timid effort went well wide! Valley had most of the chances in the first half but they were playing with the strong wind and needed another goal to be comfortable.

At half time, Hickey warned our players that we had been up before against Lismore and that we would be playing against a strong breeze in the second half. We had to dig in and get a result.

All that was put to practice for about 10 minutes until Lismore equalised. They played some nice football down the left before their striker found himself all on his own to finish easily. Lismore were now on top in midfield and creating chances easily. They went ahead soon afterwards when our keeper threw the ball in the goals for them. Rumley has been leaking a few goals recently. When quizzed afterwards he said that he had to make a game out of it!

That was a big blow to Valley. Being one up and then to go one down in the space of 10 minutes was real hard to take. Lismore were on top up until this and all the signs were there that this was going to be another deflating loss. However, this was not to be. Valley's new resillience this year showed and heads were up high and Valley battled hard. Twomey and Carr took over midfield and supplied some wonderful balls for front men Kearney and Caplice. From one of these, Caplice did brilliant to get a shot on goal. It rebounded from the post only for Kearney to be there for the rebound. Two two, back in the game.

Valley now chased the winner again. A few half chances fell to Caplice and Noonan but the Lismore keeper saved well. However the winner came when Kearney was put through and he finished with a lovely strike with his left peg in off the post. Valley were now on top and dominating the game. Instead of defending, they attacked the get the insurance goal. Lismore were kept out brilliantly by Hickey, Riordan and Alan Carr as well as Jim Lane who was out back left back for the second half. The final whistle was blown and Valley were relieved to get the three points

Overall, it was a fantastic game to play in. Lismore are a good side and were well up for it. We matched them all the way and our greater determination showed. Well done to all. Man of the match could have gone to a number of people like Rumley (not!!),Lane, Twomey, Carr Jnr but I am giving it to Hickey as he did a lot of cleaning up which was vital.

Team: Rumley, A.Carr, Hickey, Riordon, Ronayne (Noonan), Lane, Carr Jnr, Twomey, Hogan, Kearney, Caplice

20th October, Premier League, Valley Park, Valley v Ardmore - 2 vs 1

After snatching a great late draw against Cappaquin, Valley were up against Ardmore on this cold and wet Sunday morning. It was a credit to Conna pitch that this game went ahead in the first place.

Valley had the strong wind behind them in the first half with a few half chances falling to Kearney. The wind though was proving to be a bit of a nuisance as everything was overhit. The half time whistle was closing when Bryan scored a rather fortuitous goal when the keeper left a long shot go through his hands.

They all count though and it was a relief for Valley to be winning at half time. They were not playing that well but it was a very important goal. Valley knew that Ardmore would be putting us under extreme pressure in the second half.

Ardmore did put Valley under a little pressure but the wind was being a hindrance to them too. Kearney won a free kick after an Ardmore player saw red for his second booking. A great cross from Ronayne was finished to the net by Twomey. It was to prove a vital goal as Armdmore scored from the penalty spot later on.

Overall, this was not a dirty game but there were two from each team sent off. Harshly in my view but thats just me. Good result, poor performance but the conditions were to blame for this. The good work must continue though.

Highlight of the game must be Bruno in goals covered in muck from head to toe.

Team: Rumley, A.Carr, Hickey, Riordon, Ronayne, Noonan, Carr Jnr, Twomey, Kearney, Bryan

13th October, Premier League , Cappaquin, Cappaquin v Valley - 2 vs 2

This was a very tough encounter for Valley facing the reigning league champions away from home in the first league game of the season. This was always going to be the hardest game of the year for us and we grabbed a result from no where which made it all the better!!

Valley started the game with a full squad of players with a few of the subs unlucky to lose out. Its a great boost to have the calibre of Bryan, Carr Snr and Jim Lane on the bench. Cappaquinn too looked to have a full team and were, as expected fully up for this game.

Cappaquin started the better and got into their flow easier than Valley. Before Valley could get going, they found themselves two goals down. Two very silly goals to concede. It was a sickening blow to Valley as the way the goals were conceded was farsical. Anyway, enough said about them.

Once the second goal went in, Valley began to wake up and started to play some nice football. Some nice interchanges between Carr Jnr, Twomey, Noonan and Kearney created a great chance for Caplice but unfortunatly, the keeper was on top form. He also made an excellent save from Carr Jnr. Valley piled on the pressure before the half time whistle but could not get one back

Cappaquin were happy for the half time whistle to be blown. At half time we tried to sort things out at the back. We said that Cappaquin were happy with what they had and that they would defend and defend. We had to get at them so Valley went out in a determined mood. Unfortunatly, this was not helped by Kearney seeing red for the first time in his soccer career. However, this allowed the Valley players more time and space and they began to lay siege on the Cappaquin defence. Gordie who was brought on at half time caused all sorts of problems for the Cappaquin defence. He was robbed when a great shot hit the post midway through the second half.

Things looked to be slipping away from Valley until they finally got some luck when a Cappaquin player put it through their own net. This was the bit of luck we needed. Valley piled more pressure on the defence and continued to do so, but the Cappaquin defence was strong and the goal did not look like coming. Most of the spectators (including Kearney) were heading off when Gordie was put through and was bundled over in the box. The crowd looked at the referee who pointed to the spot. Anyway, Billy Carr Jnr stepped up and after some play acting from the Cappaquin boys, he slotted it into the right hand bottom cornet like his auld fella!. It was a pressure penalty and fair play to him. He kept his cool!! The referee blowed final whistle soon afterwards.

All in all, it was a terrific result for Valley. If we lost this one, we would have been chasing the league but now, we can go on confidently, win all our games and then beat Cappaquin at home in the return fixture. Man of the match has to be Billy Carr Jnr for slotting that penalty away.

Team: Rumley, A.Carr, Hickey, Riordon, Ronayne (Carr Snr), Noonan (Lane), Carr Jnr, Twomey, Kearney, Caplice (Bryan)

6th October, Fitzgerald Cup 1st Leg, Castlelyons, Castlebridge Celtic v Valley - 0 vs 4

This win could be best described as a very professional win against a side who were well up for the game.

The game was played on a fog laden pitch but the referee said that the game was playable. After a few minutes the fog disappeared and the game started at a frentic pace with Castlebridge showing Valley that they were really up for it.

Valley competed very well in midfield with Twomey and Carr Snr combining very well on a slippery surface. Up front, Kearney should have scored when he broke free after good work from Caplice. Castlebridege also had a few half chances, but for a change, Rumley was awake in goals.

With Valley's defence well on top with Riordan and Ronayne performing very well, Valley attacked and won a free kick. Alan Carr poked the Noonan head down in to an empty net to put Valley one up. Castlebride attacked afterwards and had to thank Ronayne for a superb tackle when the equaliser loomed.

Valley scored the important second on the stroke of half time following some superb approach play from Twomey. Hogan finished the pass to the net to put Valley two up.

The second half was more of the same with Castlebridge doing most of the attacking. Valley attacked also on the counter attack with Kearney going close on a few occasions. The game was wrapped up late on when Kearney scored twice. One from a Jim Lane pass and the other from John Ronayne's corener kick, out jumping all the other giants!

All in all, it was a very good performance but Twomey made sure all the feet were kept firmly on the ground. Concentration and clear heads were to be kept for the league games. Best on this day for Valley were Carr, Ronayne, Twomey but the vote must go to Niall Riordan for his performance

Team: Rumley, A.Carr, Hickey, Riordon, Ronayne, Noonan (Lane), Carr Snr (Carr Jnr), Twomey, Kearney, Caplice (Bryan)

22nd September, Fitzgerald Cup 2nd Leg, Middle of Nowhere, Blackwater Rangers v Valley - 0 vs 3

Well there were certaily a few sore heads again for this one. Hickey looked as if he was still drunk and he more than likely was. Valley were playing a second leg against poor opposition and came out easy winners with a 3-0 victory

Why we have to play two legs for this competetion is a very good question. Would it not be better off to get the pointless cups out of the way and get the league started so that it can finish before the hurling gets serious next year. But that would be the intelligent thing to do.

Notable points in this game was the excellent performance of Twomey in the middle of the park. He layed on some great balls for the front men Kearney and Caplice who terrorised the home defence.

Caplice scored the first with a great finish after good work by Hogan and Kearney. Kearney scored the second with a good shot from outside the box and Caplice wrapped up the scoring in the second half with a good run and finish. Rumley also was back in the team.

He had his chance to impress when he faced a rather controversial penalty. He outwitted the attacker and watched as the ball dribbled wide. Rumley infomred me that he is yet to conced a goal this year. I informed him that it would not be hard as he has not been at half the matches!

Team: Bruno, A.Carr, Hickey, Reardon, Rohan, Noonan, Carr Snr, Twomey, Hogan, Caplice, Kearney Subs: O' Leary for Kearney (HT), Keneally for Carr Snr (HT)

15th September, Fitzgerald Cup 1st Leg, Valley Park, Valley v Blackwater Rangers - 4 vs 0

Written by Sean Twomey

So much for the strong words of the week before. At least the players turned up on time this week and none got sick, but despite an easy looking draw we still struggled to get to grips with this game. Perhaps this had much to do with our new Captain Fantastic and a number of the other players being out on the piss in Cork City the night before. Lucky Kearney wasn't there to tell what he thought about it.

Bruno Rumley turned up though, a pity it was a week late so Donal O'Leary continued in goals. The opposition did their best to put Valley off by trying to start without jerseys but thankfully the ref saved our eyes and insisted on waiting until they arrived with them.

The game started very poorly, with Valley on top but making a series of unforced errors. Indeed the first shot of the game arrived after 25 minutes when Blackwater Rangers aimed a weak effort at O'Leary's goal. He gratefully accepted and set Valley on the attack again. After a series of poor corners Billy Carr Snr was returned to take over the duty to show the previous effortees how to do it. He duly hit delivered a low corner from the left that John Rohan crisply finished low into the net.

This didn't take the fight out of Blackwater however, and their physical, niggly game plan continued. However, Valley were a much more assured team now and continued on the attack. Gordon Bryan who had been dropping deep effectively to pick up the ball and run at the defence really should have extended Valley's lead shortly after but placed his shot straight at the keeper. He made amends shortly after though, when cutting in from the right wing he dispatched a rising shot from the edge of the area with his favoured left peg in to the top corner.

At the break Colin Hogan came on for Bryan, and as if to prove a point he scored. After this Valley missed chance after chance, Donal Caplice, Sean Twomey and Hogan could have all scored. In the end it was left to Billy Carr Snr to convert a penalty won by Jnr to finish the days drama as the Blackwater player completed the lonely walk to dressing room after receiving a red card. Indeed, he was unlucky he was lonely as a number of others could have been brandished.

All in all, it was a good result but a poor performance from Valley. The passing was lacking sharpness and too many unforced errors would have been punished against a stronger team. On the positive side of things Alan Carr seems to have grown into the role of right-full and played very well there, his distribution and tackling were excellent although on two occasions he did get sucked in to midfield following the ball leaving his post unattended. John Rohan looked much more comfortable when returned to left-full and Niall Reardon played well in the centre. A lot of work needs to be done yet, but the squad looks strong in all areas bar one. A change of attitude might bring Valley into the reckoning for the league, but isn't that a familiar line by now.

Team: O'Leary, A.Carr, Hickey, Reardon, Lane, Noonan, Carr Snr, Carr Jnr, Rohan, Caplice, Bryan Subs: Hogan for Bryan (HT), Twomey for Noonan (60), Keneally for Caplice (80)

8th September, Tony Bolger Cup, Valley Park, Valley v Lismore - 2 vs 3

Another game thrown away by Valley. Leading one nil and two one during the game, Valley still managed to lose this game. Its no wonder that it happened with the state of some of the players that turned up. As stated afterwards, things have to improve if we are to have any chance of winning that elusive league title

On the day, Valley were just carrying too many players. Valley played well but some sloppy defending and some stupid mistakes again cost Valley victory. Credit to Lismore for never giving up. Some of Valley's players should learn from them. Valley' scorers on the day were Caplice and Kearney.

Team: Donal O' Leary, Alan Carr, Niall Riordan, Brendan Hickey, John Rohan (Paul Kenneally), Jim Lane (Sean Twomey), Billy Carr Jnr, Billy Carr Snr, Padraig Noonan, Shane Kearney, Donal Caplice.

1st September, Tony Bolger Cup, Valley Park, Valley v Inch - 0 vs 0 Valley win 4-2 on penalties

Valley got through to the next round on this beautiful Sunday morning. There were a few Valley players worst for wear including Carr (Jnr of course) and Bryan as usual.

This was a fairly boring game really with both sides having a ffe chances here and there. The game ended 0-0 at full time and extra time was then played to the delight of the teams. No goals here ensured the lottery of penalties where carr jnr, bryan, carr snr and hogan all scored with Donal O' Leary saving two penalties to ensure Valleys passage to the next round against Lismore.>

Moment of the day: Has to be the state of Bryan and Carr Jnr before the game. They were in a bad state!!

Team: Paul Kenneally, Alan Carr, Billy Carr Snr, Brendan Hickey, John Rohan, Donal Caplice, Billy Carr Jnr, Shane Kearney, Jim Lane, Colin Hogan, Gordon Bryan.

25th August, Tony Boger Cup, Valley Park, Valley v Castlebridege Celtic - 3 vs 1

Well, the new season has approached us very quickly. We start this season without one of our best friends. John will be missed very dearly by the club and all his friends. May he rest in peace.

The game was played in ideal conditions with the sun blazing down on us. Valley started brightly passing the ball around very well. A few half chances fell to Kearney and Bryan before the latter scored with a hightly debatable goal. The Castlelyons keeper practically threw the ball into the net but I suppsoe they all count!

Valley deserved their half time lead as they were by far the better team. The second half was more of the same with Valley only in 3rd gear. That was to change however when Castlebridege with their only shot on goal scored a cracker, although it wouldn't take much to beat our goalie!

This was the kick on the backside that Valley needed. Substitute Donal Caplice scored to redeem himself after missing a few sitters before that and Bryan wrapped it up again at the end for the final score to be 3-1.

Valley deserved the win and played well. There is an excellent squad there this year with the likes of Sean Twomey and Damien O' Farrell still to come back. If we can get our fingers out this season and challenge Cappaquin, we can win that elusive league title. Well done to John Rohan who impressed at left back. Watch out Damo!

Moment of the day: Has to be Alan Carrs brilliant freekick. After being specially brought up to take it, he balooned it miles high and wide!!

Team: Bruno, Alan Carr, Niall Riordan, Brendan Hickey, John Rohan, Padraig Noonan (Donal Caplice), Billy Carr Jnr, Billy Carr Snr, Colin Hogan, Shane Kearney, Gordon Bryan.

22nd May, 2002

Well another season ends in disappointment. I think this is definetly down to a lot things. On a personal note, it was impossible for me to play while studying for my final exams in college. I am sure others are the same. On another note, a few more of us just were not fully committted this season for whatever reasons.

We only have to look at Cappaquin to see what they achieved this year. There is no point looking back and saying what if. Next year is a new year. There will be more of us around locally so we can go training and be fully committed to winning that elusive league winners medal. So overall we can look back on a sason where we won our first cup in years and the B team came very close to promotion. Thanks to Matt Harper and Johnny Lonergan for all their work over the year.

7th April, Dungarvan Tyre Cup Semi-Final, Ballyduff, Valley v Lismore - 1 vs 5

Less said the better.

31st March, Premier League, Lismore, Lismore v Valley - 1 vs 2 Game abondoned 40th minute

Due to an unfortunate accident sustained by one of the Lismore players to their leg just before half time, this game was called off. We would like to wish the lismore player all the best and a speedy recovery.

The game itself was a good one although Valley's captain failed to show up. His brother being a bad influence. I'd say the two of them were glued to the bed. No getting bruno up when he's in that mood! As a matter of fact, I think the committment of the players this year has been a joke. Another supposedly committed player, Hickey was away on a session for the weekend. Lets hope now he will be dropped for the next game. The game will be that bit quieter anyway. Imagine the state of him after the session. He won't be able to run ten metres, never mind last a full 90 minutes.

We only had 10 players by the time Lismore had taken the lead. Sunny Keeffe was a pity in goals! He was the first Valley keeper to play gloveless and it showed. Valley then got on top with a few half chances with Kearney's effort getting BLOCKED by the keeper. Spacer Noonan then got on the scoring sheet as he first stuck his leg out after the keeper made a hash of a catch. The second one he could not miss as he was practically on the line when he kicked it in.

Thanks to Seamus Hogan for turning up at short notice and playing very well on the left. Gordons place is looking in doubt and there could be another strike parnership forming with Kearney and Noonan (scorer of two superb goals last week) cutting the Lismore defence apart at their own will. Hopefully the gaffer took notice.

Another man who has not been seen at a soccer match in a while is the one and only famous Don Juan McCarthy and it was good to see him again on Sunday morning shouting abuse at all the players and laughing his arse off at Valley players when they missed sitters (or in my case, the keeper saved it). Now tamed by his missus, he is a shadow of his former self.

Incidentally, we are playing Lismore again this Sunday at 11.30 in the Dungarvan Leader Cup semi-final. The match is on in Ballyduff and your support will be welcome.

Team: Sunny Keeffe, Niall Riordan, Sean Twomey, Damien Farrell, Seamus Hogan, Billy Carr Jnr, Billy Carr Snr, Shane Kearney, Colin Hogan, Padraig Noonan.

24th March, Dungarvan Tyre Cup, Ballyduff, Ballyduff v Valley - 0 vs 4

Valley had another easy win here against a poor Ballyduff team. Valley now progress into the semi-finals where they will play Bride View on what will be a mighty encounter.

Valley's scorers were Billy Carr Jnr (2), Sean Twomey with another poxy goal and Terence Rumley. Another highlight of the day was the gaffers fall that made him look the right prat. Well done Johnny!! Also, a get well message to Pa Flynn who had a little accident with a window Saturday night and to Gordon who has a fake hamstring injury!

Team: John Rumley, Niall Riordan, Brendan Hickey, Sean Twomey, Damien Farrell, Padraig Noonan, Billy Carr Jnr, Billy Carr Snr, Shane Kearney (Sunny Keeffe), Terence Rumley, Gordon Bryan (Colin Hogan).

3rd March, Dungarvan Tyre Cup, Valley Park, Valley v Pinewood Rangers - 4 vs 0

Valley won this game easily against a very poor Pinewood team. Valley however still had to win the game and did it very convincingly. Minuse a few regulars, Rumley and Flynn came into the team. A crowd had turned up to see Fagan play on the right hand side for his first 'A' game, where he played very well and might be looking for a permanent call up!

One player who has received a lot of stick on this web site played very well on Sunday. Bryan scored one excellent goal in the first half, rounding two players before slotting the ball into the net casually. He then scored another one after a great pass from Rumley. Carr Jnr then added a third with a great shot from the edge of the box that left the crowd stunned.

The second half was more of the same with Rumley getting on the scoresheet again after rounding the keeper. Thankfully, Bryan missed the chance of a hatrick with the miss of the season missing an open goal. His first goal just about made up for it!

The game ended prematurely when one of the Pinewood players noticed a hole in the pitch (well it was more of a crater really). Derry was sent in search of a shovel to fill it but the Pinewood players were after enough and told referee Leonard Fraser to blow it up. Good win for Valley but Pinewood were really poor. Still, a win is a win! Good to see Donal O' Leary on the scene togging out and also good to see him staying that way!! Well done to blind date flop Kenneally on making an appearnce and getting his hands dirty!!

Team: John Rumley, Niall Riordan, Brendan Hickey, Sean Twomey, Damien Farrell (Paul Kenneally), Padraig Noonan, Billy Carr Jnr, Billy Carr Snr, Patrick "Fagan" Flynn, Terence Rumley, Gordon Bryan.

24th February, Premier League, Valley Park, Valley v Lismore - 2 vs 2

Valley all but ended their own hopes of winning the league this year. Up 2-0 and cruising they somehow managed to throw it all away and end up 2-2.

Missing Kearney through injury and Keffee and Twomey to abseentism, Valley found themselves 2-0 up quite luckily. The Lismore goalie made a horrific blunder in the first half to leave Noonan an open goal for which seemed like an eternity before slipping the ball into the net. Lismore had a few chances as well in the first half but Fitzy made a few handy saves.

The second half started brightly with Valley creating a few half chances. Then, Rumley capitalised on a defensive error and put the ball into an empty net. Valley were now cruising and took their foot of the peddle big time which was to prove very costly indeed. Lismore got one back thorugh a penalty and scored their second after the Valley defense were left ball watching.

Try as they might, Valley could not get another goal and a draw was a fair result. But Valley had thrown the game away.Any chance of winning the league is now more or less gone. It will take a miracle to catch up to Cappaquin now.

Team: Shane Fitzgerald, Niall Riordan, Brendan Hickey, Ger Lynch, Damien Farrell, Gordon Bryan, Billy Carr Jnr, Billy Carr Snr, Padraig Noonan, Terence Rumley, Colin Hogan.

17th February, Premier League, Cappaquin, Cappaquin v Valley - 1 vs 0

Disaster struck here for Valley when they went down to a very fortunate goal by cappaquin. However, all is not lost yet. If we win all our remaining games including a win against cappaquin at home we will finish joint top assuming Cappaquin do not slip up in the meantime.

Valley started with a full squad even though Bryan started on the bench because of a niggling injury. Valley had Twomey and Lynch back in the squad, so we were very confident of a result.

Valley started brightly with Noonan and Farrell and Riordan and Kearney linking up well on the wings. Hogan and Rumley had a few half chances but the Cappaquin goalie was not tested enough.

Cappaquin had one good chance but Fitzy made a brave save to deny them. Then, just on half time, Cappaquin scored what must be the luckiest goal ever. Keeffe was clearing the ball when it cannoned off one of their players and went into the bottom right of the goal. Valley took the kick off and the half time whistle was blown. It could not have come at a worst time.

Valley tried with all their might to cut open the Cappaquin defence to no avail. It remained tight and deep giving Valley little or no chance of equalising.

Overall, it was a good performance from Valley especially not playing a game for so long. However we did not create enough chances to win the game. We had all the ball but we could not create anything with it.

It will be an extremly tough task to win the league now but it is still possible and while it is, we will keep going to win it.

Team: Shane Fitzgerald, Niall Riordan, Brendan Hickey, Martin Keeffe, Padraing Noonan, Damien Farrell, Billy Carr Jnr, Billy Carr Snr (Gordon Bryan), Shane Kearney, Terence Rumley, Colin Hogan (Sean Twomey).

13th January, Premier League, Valley Park, Valley v Bride View A - 1 vs 1

A big enough crowd turned up for this one in what was a very important league game with both sides still in contention for the title. The pitch was a bit sticky but other than that, the conditions were perfect.

Both teams started brightly with Bride View hitting the bar with one of their blow in Ukranians with a spectacular shot that had Fitzy beaten all ends up. After that shock, Valley woke up a bit and started to play a bit of nice football.

With the Bride View keeper penalised for holding the ball too long, a free kick was awarded to Valley. The quick thinking Gordon Bryan(for once) took it quickly and passed it to Rumley who poked it into the net with his left foot. It was a great goal and was just what Valley needed. After that it was even enough till Bride View equalised after the Valley defence was exposed a bit. It was 1-1 at half time.

The second half was more of the same with both keepers making a few good saves. Billy Carr Jnr in particular having a good chance. All in all a draw was probably a fair result. Both teams are still in it.

6th January, Munster Junior Cup, Valley Park, Valley v Bunratty - 0 vs 2

Simply stated, Valley were knocked out of this competition by a better team. Bunratty came all the way from Clare for this one and were really up for it. Valley however were also up for it and the large enough crowd were looking forward to a good performance.

The game started at a frantic pace. Both sides were getting a feel of each other. However disaster struck for Valley when Bunratty scored just as Valley were getting to grips with Bunrattys style. The goal was a disaster as Valley know had to chase the game and let themselves vulnerable to the counter attack.

The rest of the first half was top quality football from both sides with both keepers under pressure. Valley had a good shot from Keeffe which the keeper did very well to save. A great cross from Hogan was headed narrowly wide from O' Leary. Rumley had a few half chances as well.

All in all, Valley could have been pleased with their performance except for the goal. They had put a fair share of pressure on Bunratty and were unlucky to end the half behind.

The second half was more of the same with Bunratty committed to defending and then breaking on the counter. Valley did not have as many chances this half with Keeper Fitz making a few good saves to keep Valley in the game. However the game was as good as finished when Bunratty scored a great goal ten minutes from time.

So another of our escapades in the Munster Junior cup have come to an end. Every player could hold their heads high. Bunratty train three times a week and compared to us, looked that bit sharper and more comfortable with the ball. But now, Valley can concentrate on winning the league.

Team: Shane Fitzgerald, Niall Riordan, Brendan Hickey, Martin Keeffe, Damien Farrell, Padraing Noonan (Alan Carr), Billy Carr Jnr, Billy Carr Snr (Ted Leary), Shane Kearney, Terence Rumley, Colin Hogan.

December 30th, Premier League, Ardmore, Ardmore v Valley - 2 vs 3

This was a great win from Valley. It keeps us in the hunt for the title this season. Rumley was the hero here with a brilliant hatrick proving his worth!!

December 23rd, Premier League, Gortroe, Gortroe vs Valley - 1 vs 5

This was a good win for Valley although the score was probably a little flattering to them. It was a very cold morning and Valley did not open the scoring until late in the half through Rumley from a great Hogan cross. With Gortroe commiting players forward, Valley were able to counter and scored again through Billy Carr Jnr ( I think).

Gortoe then came back and scored with a header at the back post. They were then denied an equaliser by the post with Martin O' Keeffe unlucky not to score an own goal!

Valley however regained control and scored three late goals through Carr Jnr again, Hogan and Twomey. It was a good performance and keeps us in the hunt for that elusive title.

December 16th, Premier League, Valley Park, Valley v Ballyduff - 0 vs 0

This must have been Valleys worst performance of the season. Evryone one looked as if they had been out all night. And they were!! Ballyduff came here confident of a result and deserved to get a point from the game. This must have been one of the worst matches to watch over the whole season for the small crowd that turned up for it.

Anyway, the second half was more of the same with no one showing any bit of imagination. Valley had a few half chances but never looked like scoring.

All in all, it was a terrible performance from the team but at least we were not beaten.

Team: Shane Fitzgerald, Padraing Noonan, Brendan Hickey, Niall Riordan, Damien Farrell, Gordon Bryan, Billy Carr Jnr, Billy Carr Snr, Shane Kearney, Terence Rumley, Colin Hogan.

December 2nd, Munster Junior Cup, Valley Park - Valley v Cappaquin - 3 vs 1

Valley qualified out of the Red House League section and now go into the open draw and in the Waterford section. After going so far in this last season, it would be great to have another crack off it again this season.

This game was fought against a tough Cappaquin team who are known to be a tough team to beat. They were top of the league and were in good form. Valley started with out influential defender Twomey again with Sunny filling in at centre half this time. The game was even enough at the start until cappaquin were awarded a penalty after Niall Riordan fouled (Sorry Niall!!). However mighty Fitz (who was showing off his girlfriend Saturday night) pulled off one of his best ever penalty saves to keep it out.

Valley then started to get on top with the two Billy's doing well in the middle. The two wingers Kearney and Bryan were beginning to do well also. The first goal came following good work by Kearney who took a few players on before passing to Billy Snr who then layed it off to his son to score via a deflection I was told!! From what I heard after, Billy was lucky to have touched the ball after his explots all weekend!

In the second half, Hogan got two fine goals. The first was especially nice rounding his marker and chipping into the top corner. Cappaquin clawed it back to 3-1 with a penalty that Brendan Hickey conceded!

All in all, it was a very good result for us and we can now look forward to another good run but be warned. The Wateford opposition will be good! Also, it was good to see Ger Lynch back. A very valuable member of our squad especially with that old crock Twomey injured.

Team: Shane Fitzgerald, Niall Riordan, Brendan Hickey, Martin "Sunny" O' Keeffe, Padraig Noonan, Gordon Bryan, Billy Carr Jnr, Billy Carr Snr, Shane Kearney (Ger Lynch), Terence Rumley, Colin Hogan.

November 25th, Premier League, Ballyduff - Ballyduff v Valley - 1 vs 5

Valley started out their league campaign with an emphatic win over Ballyduff. It was not all plain sailing because Ballyduff more than held their own in the first half. Valley were a bit sluggish and were lucky to go in at the break ahead.

The second half was more of the same and Valley eventually came away with all three points. Scorers were Billy Carr Jnr (2), Terence Rumley (2) and Colin Hogan.

Team: Shane Fitzgerald, Padraig Noonan, Brendan Hickey, Niall Riordan, Damien Farrell, Gordon Bryan, Billy Carr Jnr, Martin "Sunny" O' Keeffe, Shane Kearney, Terence Rumley, Colin Hogan.

November 18th, Munster Junior Cup, Valley Park - Valley v Lismore - 1 vs 1 aet, Valley win 4-3 on pens

There was a touch of dejavu here in this match. The two sides had met in the Bolger Cup final a few weeks previously and the same outcome occurred again this time. Damien Farrell was again the hero to score the crucial penalty so send us through to the final of the Red House League section. Terence Rumley scored the goal in normal time before Lismore equalised. Neither team could score the winner in remaining time.

November 4th, FAI Junior Cup, Carrick-On-Suir - Rock Rovers v Valley - 7 vs 1

The less said about this the better.

October 29th, Tony Bolger Cup Final, Valley Park - Valley v Lismore - 0 vs 0 aet, Valley win 4-3 on pens

Valley waited 14 years for this trophy. It certainly has been a long time coming. After all the years of heartbreak and hard luck stories, Valley finally got a bit of luck and emerged victorious after a penalty shootout.

In what was probably a very entertaining 0-0 draw, both sides could have won it. Lismore were always dangerous from set pieces with the two big fellas up front. They hit the crossbar once and the post another time from free kicks. Other than set pieces, the Valley defenders had them well under wraps.

Valley too had their chances with Rumley missing out on a few occasions. The match then went to extra time with both sides still pushing for that elusive goal. When neither team got it in the 20 minutes, we were heading to the lottery of penalties.

When Billy Carr Snr missed our first one, we thought the worst. However, with hickey, twomey keeping their nerver, we were still in with a chance and when Lismore missed one and Fitzy saving another, it was down to Damien Farrell to score his penalty and we would be crowned champions. The huge crowd in attendance looked in as Damien lashed the ball in and the Valley crowd went mad.

Terence Rumley proudly accepted the cup from paddy Pollard and a good night was had by all thereafters!

October 14th, FAI Junior Cup, Clonmel - Valley v ???????!! - 2 vs 1

Valley had another great win in this competition. Missing some key players, Valley were not expecting to come out on top in this game. The team that they were playing had beaten fellow Red House League team Pinewood Rangers in the previous round.

Because Valley were without Twomey, Kearney, Rumley and Bryan, no one in the club expected us to win but what a win! The final score was 2-1 with Damien Farrell getting a goal, showing the great form that he is in lately and also Paudie Noonan getting on the score sheet.

All in all, a great win and it gives Sean Twomey another chance to make an appearence in this competition.

7th October, Munster Junior Cup, Valley Park - Valley v Bride View - 2 vs 1

This was the first local derby of the season and it was a very important game for Valley. After going so far last season, it was very important to go on another good run to keep the season even more interesting.

The pitch was lined in the morning but the subsequent showers dissolved all the lime so there were no lines. Referee Willie Collins warned players that he would take no critisism over the line balls that he would award. Over the 90 minutes the pitch held up very well.

The game started at a frantic pace with Valley trying to get the upperhand early. Valley played some fine footbal this half. They did not have to wait too long before Bill Carr Jnr scored with a nice low drive into the bottom left corner. It was soon to become two when Terence Rumley applied the finishing touch to a Shane Kearney cross. Valley played some excellent football towards the end of the half and were unlucky not to be a few more goals to the good.

Valley knew that Brideview were going to give it everything in the second half and that we were going to have to defend strongly. Valley did defend very well and broke away the odd time and should have scored a few more. They were very guilty of poor finishing. Brideview scored with a few minutes left to give Valley a few anxious moments towards the end but they held out for a deserved win.

31st September, Bolger Cup Semi Final, Inch - Valley v Ardmore - 3 vs 0

On a nice Sunday morning the teams of Ardmore and Valley arrived for the semi final of the Tony Bolger Cup Semi Final. Valley had a few missing again because of the football match later in the afternoon. Ardmore started the game with only eight men and Valley were to take full advantage of that.

Damien Farrell sent in a great ball to which Bill Carr Jnr applied an excellent finish to put Valley 1-0 up. It was a dream start for Valley. Once Ardmore had the full eleven, the game was very even with most of the play around the midfield area. The rest of the half was a fairly dull encounter.

The second half was more or less more of the same but with Ardmore pushing forward more and more for the equaliser, thier defence was left a bit exposed and Valley got two late goals to seal the win. Terence Rumley scored again and so too did Colin Hogan.

All in all, a very good win for Valley while missing a few players. Another clean sheet indicates that Valley's defence is in top form at the moment.

23rd September, FAI Junior Cup, Valley Park - Valley v Kilcommon FC - 4 vs 0

After last years great success in the Munster Junior Cup, Valley were looking forward to another great run in this years FAI cup. Nobody knew anything about our first round opponents Kilcommon FC, but we knew we had to respect them and play well to beat them.

The first half was played at a frantic pace with both teams getting to grips with each other. It took Valley a while to get to grips with things as Sean Twomey was missing. Kilcommon had a few good chances but Valley had two clearcut chances with Bill Carr Snr and Colin Hogan being the guilty parties.

After a stern talking to at halftime by Sean Twomey of all people, Valley A started magnificently with goals from Bill Carr Snr which was a cracker and Shane Kearney getting one as well. Valley were well on top this half. Witk Kilocommon pushing forward, Valley pounced on the break late on to score two goals from Terence Rumley.

All in all, a great result from Valley and lets hope that we can progress a bit!

2nd September, Valley Park - Valley v Blackwater Rangers - 2 vs 1

Valley won this one 2-1. Valley were missing quiet a few players but it just shows the strength in depth when we can still win this one missing most of a team. Fair play to those who filled in and a good debut for manager Johnny Lonergan!!
